Itinerary

Your tour begins by luxury coach departing the city of Adelaide and travelling into the picturesque Adelaide Hills to arrive in the ever-popular township of Mount Barker.

Here you will board the South Coast Wine Train and travel from the heart of Mount Barker past new residential developments and escape into the fields of local produce, rolling hills and rich farming land, all whilst being surrounded by the majestic eucalyptus trees of the region.

Enjoy distant glimpses of the eastern plains and Murraylands extending from the Southern Mount Lofty Ranges toward the Coorong and South Coast, as the train slowly descends the Adelaide Hills escapement to arrive at the historic township of Strathalbyn.

Meet your luxury tour coach for a town tour of Strathalbyn before travelling the short distance to the vineyards of Langhorne Creek. Arrive at your first winery for the day and be guided through a tasting of local wines in an informal, relaxed approach with our wine host and the friendly cellar door staff.

Continue to the Bridge Hotel in the heart of Langhorne Creek where you will experience great country hospitality and a delicious 2 course meal at the historic 1850’s pub.

Following lunch, continue your wine tasting encounters at the next cellar door for the day where you start to experience more of the creativity and community pride that the locals have for their “hidden gem” of Australian wine regions.

From here we continue through the vineyards of Langhorne Creek on our journey towards the Currency Creek Wine Region and closer to the coast.

During your final tasting and cellar door visit, you can learn more about the region’s vineyards and what makes their wines so highly regarded and sought after or just sit back and relax in the warmth of the local’s hospitality as your cellar door host guides you through your last tasting for the day.

Your South Coast Wine Train crew will lead you through from the last winery to the nearby station where you will board the Wine Train for your return journey over the railway lines of the Fleurieu Peninsula and Strathalbyn and into the Adelaide Hills.

Sit back in your beautifully restored 1940’s carriage and enjoy a glass of wine from the bar over a local produce platter whilst you listen to the rhythm of the rails as the South Coast Wine Train makes the climb back up the Mount Lofty Ranges to Mount Barker.

After a relaxing rail journey, your coach will be waiting at Mount Barker to shuttle you back to the city of Adelaide and to your original pickup point or hotel.

You will arrive in Adelaide at approximately 7.30 pm and back to your city hotel.

NOTES

The Wine Train bar is open on the return journey from Goolwa/ Finniss to Mount Barker.

Even though the Steamranger train is advertised to be hauled by a steam engine, we do not guarantee that a steam engine will always be available due to operational constraints or similar. When a steam engine is not available, needing mechanical repairs or similar, the train will be diesel engine hauled or diesel railcar.

What to Bring
  • Comfortable enclosed walking shoes

  • sunglasses

  • hat

  • camera

  • warm clothing as the heritage train can be cold in the cooler weather

Tour Bits & Tips
  • Some of the cellar doors we visit are Bleasdale Vineyards, Lake Breeze Wines, Kimbolton Wines, Vineyard Road,  Bremerton Wines, Angas Plains Wines, Rusticana Wines, One Paddock Currency Creek Wines and Finniss River Wines.

  • The cellar doors of Langhorne Creek are only a short 10 minute drive from Strathalbyn, making the wine region closer to Adelaide than what most people think.

  • The railway line that the South Coast Wine Train tour operates on is Australia's longest preserved volunteer railway with a total distance of over 80 kilometres of track.....make sure you say thanks to one of the volunteers that make the railway operate, from the train drivers to the track crew and cleaners and everyone in between!

  • Even though Langhorne Creek is known for it red varieties of wine such as Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec, make sure you watch out for some of the whites too including Fiano, Vermentino and  Verdelho.

Tour reviews from some of our guests

 Professionalism, Punctuality, Quality and Value

We were both new to wine tours in Adelaide but still had our fair share of wine in the past. I cannot recommend this tour enough for the knowledge of the guides and the outstanding service provided.

We were fortunate enough to have an all day tour with our own private guide and we both agreed that this wine tour was our favourite part of our holiday.

If you want a knowledgeable tour with some of the best wine Australia has to offer then I can highly recommend Beyond The Vine Wine Tours ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ we will be back!
