The Adelaide Hills has developed over the decades to be the quiet achiever within the Australian wine market. Locals have known about this region’s award winning wines and rich produce for years and now it’s your chance to experience and discover the cool climate of The Hills.
Adelaide Hills Day Tour
Depart Adelaide from your city hotel and travel into the Adelaide Hills through the eastern suburbs and Greenhill Road. Enjoy the views of Adelaide as we climb the escarpment towards the Mount Lofty Summit.
Take in the far reaching views of the City and surrounds including the Adelaide Coastline from Mount Lofty or use this opportunity to perhaps enjoy some morning tea at the cafe (own cost).
Travel further through the hills and into the Onkaparinga Valley to hear the stories of the local Johnson family who had a great connection to the community through their brewery and hotels within the region. Another icon of the area is the Onkaparinga Woollen Mill at Lobethal, the makers of the blanket of the same name. Both historical buildings are now home to local cellar doors.
Journey beyond the vines to Woodside Cheese. Woodside Cheese is headed by local artisan and promoter of all things cheese - Kris Lloyd. Enjoy a tasting of her cheese at the historical Woodside Farmers Union Factory.
Next make the short walk to iconic Melba’s Chocolates. Enjoy a sample of some of their delicious products or perhaps buy yourself a bag of choccies or two.
Follow the Onkaparinga River along the Valley to the winery called Nepenthe. First established in 1994 and only the second winery in the Hills to be built, Nepenthe source their fruit from 4 or so areas within the Adelaide Hills which assist them in delivering uncompromised wines of outstanding quality and international recognition. Enjoy a taste of their cool climate whites or reds whilst learning more about the origins of their name and more.
We next arrive in the old German village of Hahndorf and pay a visit to the Adelaide Hills Wine Centre. This centre has a wide selection of products from smaller Artisan wineries and producers that may not have a cellar door open to the public. This is a great place to be surprised and to discover a few new Adelaide Hills wines.
After we have enjoyed our taste, indulge in lunch at one of the many restaurants or cafes within Hahndorf’s main street. We are happy to recommend a restaurant for the cuisine and style you desire or we can make it easy for you by offering our 2 course lunch option at a local restaurant.
After lunch enjoy free time to enjoy the main street and many of the other cellar doors and producers that are spotted along the street.
Throughout the course of the day enjoy visiting another 2 wineries within the region. These wineries may vary from day to day but may include 2 of the following - Hahndorf Hill, Bird in Hand, Artwine, O'Leary Walker and The Lane, just to name a few. Enjoy a tasting of 4 to 8 wines at each of cellar door visited
Our last winery for the day is a short journey off the main highway, Deviation Road Wines. This winery is in the hands of Hamish and Kate Laurie who both come from a long line of winemakers and tradition. This tradition has now presented them both the opportunity to make some of the region’s best sparkling and table wines.
Continue back via the scenic Eagle on the Hill road whilst spotting Koalas in the trees, a highlight for many.
Arrive back in Adelaide at 5.15 pm back to the door of your accommodation or hotel.
